Alan B. Richards MD, Founder of Eye Samaritans International

For more than three decades, Alan B. Richards MD, has served as a pediatric ophthalmologist at EyeDocsForKids and Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Ophthalmology at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport in Shreveport, Louisiana. He holds a specialization in pediatric ophthalmology and adult eye muscle disorders. In addition to his private practice of treating such eye disorders in children as strabismus, ptosis, amblyopia, genetic disorders, cataracts and glaucoma, Dr. Richards trains ophthalmology residents at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, and he examines premature infants for retinopathy of prematurity at all area hospitals.

Alan B. Richards MD completed his premed requirements at Rice University in Houston, Texas, and finished his undergraduate degree at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He went on to earn his medical degree at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Richards performed an internship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, followed by an ophthalmology residency at the Eye Foundation Hospital affiliated with the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He completed his training with a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Richards was responsible for the creation of Louisiana’s vision screening guidelines for children. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Children’s Eye Foundation, Louisiana State Medical Society, Shreveport Medical Society and American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is Chairman of Louisiana’s Vision Advisory Board.

Alan B. Richards MD has delivered many high-profile presentations around the country and has published a number of articles in medical journals. He is dedicated to helping children’s vision, both in his private practice, at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport and through Eye Samaritans International. Conquering infant blindness from retinopathy of prematurity in Eastern Europe, the Russian Federation and the Black Sea countries is his passion.
